Franklyn K. Levin

Distinguished Alumnus 1993

  • 1943 Physics
  • 1949 Ph.D.

Frank [Levin] received a B.S. degree in Physics from Purdue University in 1943, worked in the Manhattan Project from 1943-1945, and received the Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1949.

His long and continuing career in geophysics has many highlights: his years (1954-1986) of distinguished service with the Exxon Corporation (from which he retired as Senior Research Scientist, the highest technical position in the company); pioneering work on borehole measurements of seismic waveforms and in many other important areas of exploration geophysics; his service as Assistant Editor, Associate Editor, and Editor of the journal, GEOPHYSICS; and his winning of a number of prestigious awards including the Maurice Ewing Medal and the Reginald Fessenden Award of the Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) and the Earl McConnell Award from the American Institute of Mining Engineering (AIME).

It is noteworthy that Dr. Levin has maintained a continued interest in the development and training of young geophysicists. This is well illustrated by his visits to Purdue University over many years to lecture to student groups in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
